In this demonstration we showed how the Microsoft Sync Framework could integrate SQL Server 2008, SQL Server Data Services as well as Devices together with some pretty cool implementations photo sync, location based services and the new Spatial data types in SQL Server 2008.
Next, we had the chance to talk to the press about some great new consumer partnerships that we have formed. The new partners include include SmugMug, a photo sharing site for both consumers and professionals, Ontela, which provides technology infrastructure to wireless carriers that allows consumers to unlock the photos in their camera phones, and Fujitsu Siemens Computers, which is deploying the Microsoft Sync Framework enabled SyncToy solution with more than 400,000 removal storage and USB devices for consumers and business users, while collaborating on synchronization, backup, and restore for future projects.
Finally we announced today that the Microsoft Sync Framework for Windows will be released in Q3 2008 with full support for the FeedSync open protocol format. Additionally, a CTP for Windows Mobile support will also be available in Q3 2008.
Whew, I am tired! Hopefully the rest of the week will be just as exciting!

Today I am revisiting a subject that I’ve tackled previously - that of data security. Specifically, network encryption - the kind of data security that protects sensitive information as it traverses a network. The kind of data security that some organizations still have not figured out is key to the success of their IT security strategy.
First, there was the story of the data breach at Hannaford, an East Coast-based supermarket chain. Over 4 million credit card numbers were exposed as part of the data breach which resulted in 1,800 cases of fraud (was that all?). Last week we hear about a similar breach at the restaurant chain Dave & Busters, where hackers used a simple packet sniffer to capture patron credit and debit card payment information. In both cases, sensitive information was transmitted across a network in an unencrypted format. Read the rest of this entry »

If you’re looking for a pair of shoes that will exactly match the color of a favorite handbag, or love a designer’s style and want something similar but cheaper, check out Like.com’s Likethis visual search tool. It will help you find women’s handbags, shoes and dresses based on a photo you upload, and will match by style, color or pattern, with the results sent in a few minutes via email.
I ran a quick search on a beautiful pair of men’s dress shoes from Prada, and it found strikingly similar choices from Jos A. Bank, Cole Haan, and Sherman Brothers — all of which were priced $600 less than the designer Italian kicks. You can even upload photos from your iPhone, making it easy to see if you can’t find something similar for less money while window shopping. For other products, the “visual search” button did a pretty good job of turning up related results for other products like men’s suits already in the Like.com catalog.
